Title IX at the University of South Carolina
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” Title IX was passed and enacted into law in 1972. The focus of the new law wasn't on athletics but that's become one of its most visible aspects.
Students in “History of Higher Education in America” (EDHE 730) conducted research about the history of Title IX and women's athletics at USC, including conducting oral history interviews with many of the first scholarship recipients during fall semester 2022. They prepared an exhibit about this history that debuted at the women's basketball game against UCLA on Tuesday, November 29th. The exhibit is mobile and available for display at your event or in your office. Contact Jessica Allison or Christian Anderson to make arrangements.
