I joined the Department of Educational Leadership and Policies at the University of South Carolina in 2007. I graduated with a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the Department of Education Policy Studies at Penn State University. My dissertation was on "The Creation of Faculty Senates in American Research Universities." Roger Geiger was my dissertation chair and advisor.
My primary research interests include the history of higher education, faculty and organizations within higher education, public policy and politics as they relate to higher education, institutional missions, academic freedom, international higher education (especially in Latin America), college athletics, and higher education in popular culture (especially fiction and film).
While at Penn State, I worked with a number of faculty as a graduate research assistant at the Center for the Study of Higher Education. In 2004-05, I held the Allan & Roberta Ostar Graduate Fellowship, awarded by the Higher Education Program and the College of Education and I worked with Roger Williams at the Alumni Association, primarily on the academic symposium on “The Future of the American Public Research University,” which was held February 25-26, 2005 as part of Penn State’s sesquicentennial celebration. I served as an editorial assistant on Perspectives on the History of Higher Education (formerly the History of Higher Education Annual).
I was Editor of Higher Education in Review for 2005-06 (Vol. 3), which was published in April 2006. I served as president of the Higher Education Student Association, 2003 to 2004.
Prior to doing my doctoral work at Penn State I was assistant dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Utah . I earned a Master's of Public Administration with a cognate in higher education and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.
